About the Project

Senescence is a cell process that has been associated with ageing. Clearing senescent cells from tissue would ameliorate ageing in humans. In preliminary experiments performed in vitro we have demonstrated the ability of molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (nanoMIPs) to bind selectively to senescent cells.

The aim of the proposed studentship is to develop technology for reversing symptoms associated with age using MIP nanoparticles as drug delivery vehicles. The project’s work program will include the following tasks:

design and development of nanoMIPs against the validated senescent cells biomarkers
an assessment of the binding and specificity of the produced fluorescent nanoMIPs using cell imaging techniques
computational design of nanoMIPs for the controlled delivery of selected drugs capable of clearing the senescent cells.

At the later stage the generated nanoMIPs will be tested in the in vitro human skin models available in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Leicester. It is expected that this project will yield the preliminary data necessary to bring the anti-senescent nanoMIPs to clinical trials both as markers of ageing and as therapies, and result in high-profile publications in leading journals like Nature, Cell, etc.
