About the Project

Controlling systems with nonlinear dynamics is an area of great interest, due to its immediate impact on a number of technological areas such as nanopositioning, vibration isolation / control systems, drill strings, soft robots etc. Though the design and optimisation of control schemes in the frequency-domain is a mature topic in linear systems, this knowledge hasn’t yet fully been utilised to address problems in the control of nonlinear systems. This project aims at focusing on the dynamic analysis of nonlinear systems in the frequency-domain. Furthermore, it aims at formulating frequency-domain control design techniques aimed at improving the performance of nonlinear systems.

The successful candidate should have, or expect to have, an Honours Degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Electrical / Electronic / Mechanical Engineering.

Essential Background: The student must have a good understanding of Linear as well as Nonlinear Control. Experience with MATLAB / SIMULINK is essential.

Knowledge / experience in designing controllers as well as of concepts in advanced control such as robust control, optimization, nonlinear control is highly desirable.

Funding Notes

This project is for self-funded students only. There is no funding attached to this project. The successful applicant will be expected to pay Tuition Fees and living expenses, from their own resources, for the duration of study.
