Prof Osvaldo Simeone  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Sponsored by the European Research Council (ERC)

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship in the Centre for Telecommunications Research group in the Department of Informatics, King’s College London, ideally to begin in April 2019.

The Project
The Centre for Telecommunications Research group at King's College London can offer an outstanding student with a university degree a PhD studentship funded by a grant from the European Research Council (ERC) held by Professor Osvaldo Simeone. The successful candidate will work on a research project in the wide area of information theory, wireless communications and machine learning. The preferred start date is April 2019 and the duration is 3 years.

This is a research project at the intersection of information theory, wireless communications, and machine learning. The research project will specifically investigate the optimal operation of fog-aided wireless networks. This is an emerging class of wireless systems that leverages the synergy and complementarity of cloudification and edge processing, two key technologies in the evolution towards 5G systems and beyond. Fog-aided wireless networks can reap the benefits of centralization via cloud processing, in terms of capital and operating cost reductions, greening, and enhanced spectral efficiency, while, at the same time, being able to cater to low-latency applications, such as the “tactile” internet, by means of localized intelligence at the network edge. Unlike most existing simulation-based work, the aim of this project is to apply signal processing tools, such as non-convex optimization, and information-theoretic concepts to understand the optimal allocation of network functionalities across a fog wireless architecture consisting of cloud, transport and edge segments. The project will involve theoretical analyses as well as numerical simulation results to validate the theory.

Eligibility
To apply, you must have an outstanding undergraduate or MSc degree in Electronic Engineering from a high-merit institution, and master all the subjects within the standard undergraduate engineering programme, and ideally be familiar with topics in information theory and machine learning. In addition, the successful candidate should be able to program with Matlab.

Applications
Information about the programme’s application procedure can be found on the Centre for Arts & Sciences Admissions webpage: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/apply/course-types.aspx.

Candidates should apply for a PhD in Informatics in the usual way through King’s myApplication system.

To facilitate internal procedures, once you have applied for this funding please email your name, surname and application ID number to Professor Osvaldo Simeone ([Email Address Removed]), with a copy of your CV. Only successful candidates will be contacted.

Enquiries
If you have any queries concerning the research area of the project/PhD, please contact Professor Osvaldo Simeone ([Email Address Removed]).
