Funded PhD Studentship: DTC GEO 20 - An investigation into the empirical validity of the global city concept and interlocking world city network thesis

Description of Project:

The global/world city literature is dominated by two competing and contradictory hypotheses that have not yet been empirically tested. The aim of the PhD project is to empirically test each hypothesis to investigate whether, in fact, the evidence reveals neither hypothesis to be valid; as studies from a wide range of literatures – social studies of finance, cultural-economy, actor-network theory, etc. – now suggest that business centres perform and gain economic competitiveness, not through command and control, but through their participation in socio-technical networks.
