About the Project
It is intended that this studentship is part of a newly established partnership between the University of Manchester and the BBC R&D. BBC R&D is setting up a multi-university research partnership in Data Science; the University of Manchester is expected to be a partner in this initiative.

Understanding the Audience through low-level Interaction Data, will span data science / machine learning and empirical interaction science to measure the enjoyment / engagement of people when using online or broadcast media. By an analysis of appropriate large sets of interaction variables derived from human use of instrumented software and other data sources, the student will develop and evaluate models of behaviour that indicate the extent to which a user experience is successful.

All our "impact" case studies were ranked 3* and 4*, which puts us joint-top for research impact.
Applicants should have or expect to obtain a BSc 1st Class or MSc with Distinction in computer science or a related discipline and have good data analysis, user experience and programming skills. Applicants must also have British citizenship or be a permanent resident and have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.

Funding Notes
Applications are invited for this fully funded (tuition fees plus a stipend equal to the standard RCUK rate for 2017-8 (£14,553) with planned yearly increases; this will be topped-up by an additional approx. £5K per year), full-time, 4 year PhD EPSRC iCASE studentship, to start in September 2017 or as soon as appropriate.
