Vacancy Information
The Wellcome EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences is inviting applications for one PhD studentship in “Computer Vision for Surgical Assistance”. The successful applicant will be involved in the development of a next generation multi-arm flexible robot with on-board imaging and sensing, and, more specifically, the computer vision algorithms that power its navigation capabilities. The student will research computer vision algorithms that stabilise the developed robot and guide it to its desired location via visual servoing. The team’s goal is to develop a flexible robot to facilitate novel interventions to ocular structures, including retinal stem-cell delivery and thrombolytic drug deposition.
The project is part of an extensive collaboration between WEISS, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and Moorfields Eye Hospital The student will be a member of a vibrant team of approximately 10 investigators and students, and will be co-supervised by Dr. Christos Bergeles (robotics) and Prof. Lyndon da Cruz (ophthalmology). This position is funded by Dr. Bergeles’ ERC Starting Grant.
Person Specification
Applicants are expected to have a first degree in computer science or biomedical engineering or relevant physical sciences based subject passed at 2:1 level (UK system or equivalent) or above.
The PhD student sought should have:
(1) A background on robotics and computer vision; or
(2) A background on medical image analysis.
Eligibility
Funding will be for 4 years, with a tax-free stipend of £16,296 per year and UK/EU-level university fees (£4,728). Overseas students may apply if they have other means to fund the additional fees
The position will need to start by September 2018 (or earlier).
