Project description:

This is a non-funded PhD opportunity available at the College of Engineering of Swansea University, based in the Energy and Environment Research Group of the Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering.

Floods are serious natural disasters in most countries around the world. A large proportion of flood risk is from coastal flooding. It is likely that coastal flood risk will rapidly increase in future as a result of sea level rise and increasing storminess associated with global climate change thus incurring significant economic and social losses.

Many coastal cities at risk of flooding are fronted by either sand or gravel beaches, which have the potential to over-wash or breach during an extreme storm event. The aim of this project is to investigate the role of coastal morphology on flooding. Numerous researches had been done on wave overtopping and coastal flood modelling however, the role of morphodynamic interactions have been mostly neglected. In this project, we will use state-of-the-art coastal models to investigate interactions between wave propagation, overtopping and nearshore morphodynamics.

You will be working with a dynamic group of coastal engineering researchers at the College of Engineering of Swansea University. The members of the research group consisting of academics, post-doctoral researchers and PhD students who carry out world class research in coastal engineering and dynamics, involve in a range of diverse research projects and maintain strong industrial links.

Eligibility:

Candidate must have a first or upper second class honours or Masters degree in a relevant discipline.
