About the Project

A PhD studentship covering the home/EU tuition fees plus a stipend of £18,500 per annum for 3 years is currently available in Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Surrey. This studentship is open to all nationals.

Applications are invited for a PhD to perform experimental and/or numerical analyses of powder flow behaviour during powder compaction, which is a typical manufacturing process for a wide range of products, such as pharmaceutical tablets and catalyst pellets. The objective of this project is to explore the dominating mechanisms in die filling and compaction. Powders of distinctive attributes will be examined using a new custom-built experimental apparatus, with which powder flow behaviour will also be examined. Depending upon the experience and background of the candidate, it is envisaged that mechanistic analysis of powder flow behaviour may also be performed, for which an in-house DEM-CFD code will be used.

Candidates should have a first or upper second class undergraduate degree, or an MSc, in Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science, Physics, or a relevant discipline. Previous experience in particle technology, modeling and simulations, or pharmaceutical technology would be an advantage. Candidate should also be proficient in English and be able to meet the English language requirements for postgraduate applicants (http://www.surrey.ac.uk/apply/international), for example, with an IELTS score of 6.5 overall and no individual component lower than 6.0, or equivalent certification.

To apply, in the first instance, please send your CV and covering letter to Prof. Charley Wu ([Email Address Removed]).
