About the Project

Applications are invited for a full time 4-year EPSRC Industrial CASE PhD studentship at BCAST, Brunel University London starting from 1st October 2018

BCAST is a speciality research institute focusing on solidification related research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the Future LiME Research Hub). Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and materials processing. BCAST is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See http://bcast.brunel.ac.uk for more information. The work will take place in BCAST’s Advanced Metals Casting Centre (AMCC) and Advanced Metals Processing Centre (AMPC), which are new scale-up facilities that bridge the gap between fundamental research and full scale industrialisation and are aimed at meeting the short, medium and long term needs of the automotive industry. The projects will be part of the activities of the Constellium University Technology Centre (UTC) established with BCAST.

You will develop and optimise the melt treatment and thermomechanical processing (TMP) conditions for a new generation of higher thermal and electrical conductivity age hardening AlMgSiCu aluminium alloys for applications in the wiring systems of electric vehicles and in the cooling systems of electric vehicle battery modules. The research will involve liquid metal processing, extrusion and thermomechanical treatment of extruded sections. The processed sections will be analysed using a combination of optical/ electron microscopies and eddy current method to understand the effect of compositional and processing conditions on microstructure and conductivity. A strong background in physical metallurgy is essential, and experience in microstructural characterisation is desirable.

The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend and payment of their full time home/EU tuition fees for a period of 48 months. Applicants must have been resident in the UK for 3 or more years, not wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education, to receive the studentship. The successful applicants will be supported by a number of research fellows working in these project areas


Funding Notes

Successful candidates are required to have a first degree at or equivalent to 2:1 or above in a suitable engineering discipline, e.g. materials science, chemistry, physics, etc. A Master’s level qualification is desirable but not essential. Experience in solidification processing of metallic materials, skills in microstructural characterisation using various microscopy techniques and a working knowledge of mechanical testing of metallic materials is an advantage. In addition, he/she should be highly motivated, able to work in a team and have good communication skills.
