Prof J. Fitter  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

We are seeking a highly motivated person to join our research team working on a project dealing with conformational changes in biological macromolecules. The project will be performed in collaboration between the ICS-5 (Forschungszentrum Jülich) and the AG Biophysik, I. Phys. Inst. (RWTH Aachen University). The research activities of our groups aim to establish a fundamental, physics-based understanding of the function of bio-macromolecular systems. In this respect proteins and (protein based) macromolecular complexes, also within in their cellular context, are of particular interest for our research topics. In our studies we employ confocal fluorescence spectroscopy and single molecule wide-field microscopy.

Your job:
We are looking for an excellent PhD candidate for a research project on single molecule FRET studies of a neurotransmitter transporter (Machtens et al., Cell, 160, 542, 2015). We aim to identify different intermediates of the transport cycle by employing wide-field /TIR fluorescence microscopy (Fitter et al., Soft Matter, 7, 1254, 2011). The experimental techniques used are fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), multi-color detection, and single molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET).

Our offer:
We offer the possibilities to work with state-of-the-art equipment at the interface between physics and molecular biology. We offer a PhD position limited to three years including salary and all social benefits (TV-L E13 50%). You will be employed and obtain your PhD degree from the RWTH Aachen University. The possibility to apply for the “International Helmholtz Research School of Biophysics and Soft Matter” (www.ihrs-biosoft.de) is given for the successful candidate.

Funding Notes

Candidates with a Master degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Biophysics should have good experimental skills in working with optical research instruments, as well as in performing experiments and data analysis. Background in optics and laser spectroscopy is preferred. We expect excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.

We aim to employ more women in this area and therefore particularly welcome applications from women. We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
