About the Project

Loughborough University is a top-ten rated university in England for research intensity (REF2014) and an outstanding 66% of the work of Loughborough’s academic staff who were eligible to be submitted to the REF was judged as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, compared to a national average figure of 43%.

In choosing Loughborough for your research, you’ll work alongside academics who are leaders in their field. You will benefit from comprehensive support and guidance from our Graduate School, including tailored careers advice, to help you succeed in your research and future career.

Project Detail:
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Regenerative Medicine to start in October 2017. The project will be supervised by Dr Helen Willcock, and based in the Department of Materials at Loughborough University.
In the biomedical sector there is a strong interest in developing systems that are able to respond efficiently to external stimuli such as changes of pH or temperature. Stimuli-responsive hydrogel systems offer the ability to tune the stiffness, roughness and surface properties of scaffolds for regenerative medicine, whilst retaining the high water content required for nutrient transport and cell viability.
This project will combine the synthesis of stimuli-responsive crosslinked polymer nanoparticles of varying compositions by emulsion and dispersion polymerisation. These particles will then be incorporated into electrospun fibres of a polymer matrix, with the overall aim being to develop tuneable responsive scaffolds and study the effect of their responsive behaviour on the growth of various cell types.
The CDT is a collaborative centre between Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham, and Keele University. Across the CDT, we have more than 40 academic staff and their industrial and clinical partners.

The student will be registered for a PhD with integrated studies, which lasts for four years and includes taught modules in a range of science and engineering topics, as well as student presentations and mini-projects to allow exposure to a wide range of research and expertise.
