About the Project

By 2050 over 65% of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. This presents challenges regarding sustainability, especially with regards issues such as energy demand heat and power generation and air pollution.

Thus, there is the need to develop data-driven 'smart solutions' to address these challenges through the use of intelligent technologies, and the development of the tools needed to help decision makers plan, finance and deliver future sustainable cities.

In this context, this PhD research will:

- Assess the role of cities in climate change, its mitigation and how the use of intelligent technologies can decrease GHG emissions and improve energy efficiency;

- Evaluate the impact of these technologies on environmental sustainability and on human well-being;

- Develop a robust empirically-based framework to assess urban performance which considers sustainable smart cities;

- Develop an end-user focussed toolkit to enable decision makers to explore potential future sustainable urban future transitions.
