About the Project

There is much evidence of people showing biased and inconsistent thinking, polarised opinions and irrational choices and that these lead to conflict and sub-optimal outcomes for those concerned.

This project is focused on theories that contrast fast heuristic processing with slower analytic or reflective processing, and will examine the interplay and conflict between these processes. Recent research has shown that metacognitive factors such as confidence or 'feeling of rightness' are important factors in reasoning performance but that individual differences are also central to understanding our metacognition and susceptibility to biased thinking and error.

The proposed programme of studies will be among the first to scrutinise the interaction between metacognitive processes and individual differences in reasoning and thinking bias.
