About the Project

The WHO estimates that >300million people worldwide suffer from hearing loss. The development of therapies to prevent or restore hearing is hampered by the lack of a human in vitro model system. It is now possible to generate inner ear sensory epithelia from stem cells using 3D stem cell technology approaches. The student will harness this new understanding to develop an assayable stem-cell based in vitro inner ear epithelium. The student will work with and receive training from and work with experts at the UCL Ear Institute (Jonathan Gale and Anai Gonzalez-Cordero - also Institute of Ophthalmology) and UCL Biochemical Engineering (Ivan Wall) to develop, characterise and functionalise the stem-cell derived inner ear using a combination of cell biology and engineering approaches.

Funding Notes

Sponsor: NIHR UCL Hospitals Biomedical Research Centre Deafness and Hearing Problems Theme
Each studentship includes home/EU tuition fees and a tax-free stipend in the region of £16,533 (increasing in years 2 and 3) along with additional funds for conference travel.
Candidates must expect to obtain qualifications at the level of a first-class or 2.1 Honours Degree in a biomedical/biological science or related discipline.
Full funding of fees is available for UK and EU applicants.
