PhD Studentship in Synthetic Organic Chemistry – Utilizing Cooperativity for the Development of Efficient Catalysts

Project Description

A fully funded scholarship (stipend + fees) is currently available for a PhD in Auckland, New Zealand, to start as soon as possible.
Applications will be assessed as they are received.

This project aims to design new catalysts that are green and efficient by applying the concept of cooperativity. By designing systems where several catalytic units work together in a synergistic manner, highly efficient catalysis is expected to be achieved. This idea takes inspiration from nature’s enzymes, which possess several catalytic units placed in close proximity to achieve tremendous accelerations in reaction rate. The project will involve primarily synthetic chemistry, but will also employ principles of supramolecular chemistry and self-assembly. Practical experience in organic synthesis is expected, and experience in organocatalysis, cascade reactions and/or supramolecular chemistry will be an advantage. Our aim is to develop methodology that allows the transformation of molecules in ever more efficient ways, which will ultimately reduce waste, minimise energy usage and increase the sustainability of chemical processes.

Funding Notes

A fully funded scholarship of NZD$25,000/year for 3 years available. This amount is tax free and fees are also covered.
