About the Project

Applications are invited for a full time PhD studentship in solidification modelling in the Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST). Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend (bursary) of £16,553 plus payment of their full time tuition fees at the published home/EU rate for a period of 48 months.

BCAST is a speciality research institute focusing on solidification related research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the Future LiME Research Hub). Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and materials processing. BCAST is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See BCAST website for further information.

The successful candidate will work on the development and numerical implementation of mathematical models to simulate microstructure evolution in continuous and DC casting manufacturing processes. The aim is to understand and provide a basis for the quantitative prediction of grain structure and phase selection in casting of aluminium and magnesium alloys. The project will be pursued by using a combination of analytical and numerical models aimed at the simulation of solidification at mesoscopic and macroscopic length scales.

Funding Notes

Applicants will have a first degree at 2:1 or above in metallurgy, materials science or a related field of science or engineering. A Master’s level qualification is an advantage. Experience in finite element method, thermodynamic modelling and the phase-field method would be advantageous. Applicants should also be highly motivated, willing to learn new practical skills, able to work with other researchers for experimental verification of the models and have good communication skills.

Applicants must also have been resident in the UK for 3 years, not wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education, to receive the studentship.
