Project Description

Applications are invited for a funded full time PhD studentship in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.

You will work on an EU funded project relating to the design and development of real-time predictive and adaptive control of production robots and automation equipment. You will develop highly flexible and adaptive manufacturing platforms for producing optoelectronics technologies. Optoelectronics technologies are used in consumer electronic goods, solar energy, communications, LED, industrial laser, and other field. The demand for optoelectronic devices are in the rise. Faced with increasing complexity in manufacturing processes and volume of demand, the industry is striving for higher customisation and individualisation. This, combined with pressure to control production costs, imply that systems configurations need to change more frequently and dynamically. Automation and sustainability strategies would be the most logical route to reducing production costs. You will become part of the large and highly successful System Engineering Research Group (SERG) who will be the pioneers in creating new generation of highly effective and efficient and adaptive manufacturing systems that produces no defective products and no sudden breakdowns.

Eligibility

Applicants will have or expect to receive a first degree at 2:1 or above in areas such as Robotics and Automations, Machine Tools, Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Electrical Electronics Engineering. A Masters degree is an advantage but not essential. Previous industrial experience and/or national or international scientific awards will also be advantageous.
Applicants will be required to demonstrate their ability to think innovatively and produce solutions that will be applied and tested in multiple manufacturing sites throughout EU.

• Your personal statement setting out why you are a suitable candidate and your skills/experience in one or a combination of the following languages and technologies:
• Software programming (Python, C, C++, C#, .NET or Java);
• One of the Robotics Languages ;
• Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems, sensor and actuation networks and PLCs
• Labview Suite
• Hardware Decryption Languages (HDL)

Funding Notes

The studentship is for a period of 3 years and successful applicants from the UK/EU will receive an annual stipend of £16,553 (tax free) plus payment of full time Home/EU tuition fees. Successful international applicants will receive payment of their full time international tuition fee and a maximum contribution to living costs of £1,500, adjustable annually.
