Dr Elizabeth Ledgerwood  Applications accepted all year round  Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

A PhD opportunity is available for an international or NZ candidate to study the molecular basis of platelet formation. Over the last decade, analysis of inherited thrombocytopenia has provided significant insight into the complex process of platelet formation. Our research team identified the first mutation in cytochrome c to cause autosomal dominant thrombocytopenia (Morison et al, 2008). In our laboratory we are focused on understanding the underlying molecular mechanism of various mutations in order to better understand platelet formation. Applicants should have a strong background in biochemistry and cell biology. The project will be based at the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand (http://www.otago.ac.nz/biochemistry/index.html) supervised by Dr Liz Ledgerwood and Prof Ian Morison.

The successful candidate will be supported through the University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship scheme (http://www.otago.ac.nz/study/scholarships/database/otago014687.html ). This provides a NZ$25,000 tax-free stipend per annum, plus all tuition fees, for 3 years (regardless of the nationality of the candidate). Please note these scholarships are awarded based on student grades plus evidence of research excellence (for example publications). Applicants must have a strong BSc (Hons) or MSc degree in a relevant discipline, good communications skills as well as a willingness to learn, develop and apply new techniques. The start date is negotiable, with students who are completing their degree this semester/term welcome to apply.

To apply, please contact Dr Liz Ledgerwood ([Email Address Removed]) to explain your interest in this project and how this relates to your previous experience. Please include your CV, academic transcript, a copy of your research dissertation or thesis, the names of at least two academic referees and an English language test document if required (http://www.otago.ac.nz/future-students/international/otago661288.html#subnavpg).

Funding Notes

The successful candidate will be supported through the University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship scheme, with scholarships awarded based on student grades plus evidence of research excellence. International candidates receive the same package as New Zealand residents provided they reside in New Zealand for the duration of the project and study under a New Zealand student visa.
