About the Project

Our multidisciplinary group is focussed on using supramolecular interactions to produce useful materials that respond to their local environment. We have worked extensively on developing new adhesives, healing materials and printing inks.

Over recent years, the group has developed synthetic strategies which enable the synthesis of novel macrocyclic receptor compounds1 and conjugated oligo(viologen) species.2 These systems possess many exciting properties including tunable host-guest interactions and electrochromism.

This project will develop our methodologies to produce supramolecular assemblies which are conductive or semi-conductive. These supramolecular complexes will have potential applications as materials in organic light emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells.

This PhD will therefore enable the successful candidate to acquire a broad range of skills from synthetic chemistry and characterisation, to materials design and evaluation.

Funding Notes

This School funded position, which covers fees and a stipend at standard RCUK rates, is open to Home / EU applicants.

Ideal candidates will have a strong background in synthetic chemistry and analytical technics including NMR spectroscopy, additional experience in supramolecular chemistry would be an advantage. Eligible candidates will have recently received an MSc and/or a First or high 2:1 BSc in a relevant subject. Candidates for whom English is not their first language will require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with not less than 6.0 in any section.
