Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of development of advanced non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques leading to the award of a PhD degree.
The aim of this doctoral research is to develop new NDE techniques for the inspection and monitoring of fatigue degradation in safety critical steel components. It is expected that the research will involve the use primarily of ultrasonic techniques; however, the development of other NDE techniques may also be appropriate.
This area represents a strong interest for both the above industrial sponsors and the NDE industry, especially UK’s Research Centre for Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE - https://www.rcnde.ac.uk/
). The project will involve both laboratory-based, data processing and analytical work. It is expected that a total of at least three months will be spent at the offices of the industrial sponsors.
You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment for a doctorate at Imperial College. You will have at least an upper 2nd class honours degree in engineering, physics, mathematics or a related subject, strong mathematical ability and an enquiring and rigorous approach to research together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. Good team-working, observational and communication skills are essential.
