About the Project

Rapid orienting behaviour relies on detection of visual stimuli, threat evaluation and subsequent motor/action output (such as eye-movement or flight preparation). We will start with investigating the individual differences in orienting to a range of stimuli with and without negative affect or immediate functional relevance. In particular we are interested in stimuli containing movement or face/body emotional expressions. Using Diffuse Tensor Imaging (DTI) technique we will investigate differences in fibre tracks, projections to two particular brain areas, amygdala and MT, implicated in processing emotions and movement. We intend to do a similar investigation in a group of stroke patients with blindness after damage to early visual cortical areas. DTI analysis should provide direct evidence for individual differences in neuronal connectivity in healthy adults. Similar analysis in patients will aim at relating the wide range of differences seen in residual visual abilities with the extent of the sparing of brain connectivity.

To be considered for funding you will need to be UK or EU students, with the equivalent to a 1st class Honours undergraduate degree or a 2.1 Honours undergraduate degree alongside a Masters with Merit or Distinction. International applicants who meet this condition and can pay the difference between the Home and International Fees would also be considered.
