About the Project

Next generation power networks in ships, aircraft, many renewable generation systems and even some distribution networks will use DC instead of AC. Breaking DC is however problematic and no well proven solution exists. This project will investigate promising topologies include superconducting systems, power electronics, and ultrafast mechanical switches. Aerospace produces very particular challenges of pressure, weight and humidity. The project will be a combination of simulation and experimental work.

Funding Notes

Funding covers tuition fees and annual maintenance payments of £17,500. Students with a first class/2.1 degree (or equivalent) with a background in engineering and physical sciences and Humanities, are encouraged to apply.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received until a candidate is selected; therefore candidates are encouraged to apply early.
