About This PhD Project

Project Description

Grid integration of renewable energy sources are one of the main driving forces of current growth in the electric power industry, particularly in the UK. Renewable energy has also brought new challenges in this sector. One such challenge is the intermittent nature of renewable energy. The maximum available power output of renewable energy sources like Solar, Wind, Tide etc. are weather dependent. To efficiently operate these systems, engineers prefer them to operate in the maximum power point mode which is known as maximum power point tracking (MPPT).

Tremendous growth have been observed in this area in the last decade. Lots of results are available in this area. However, most of the results focus on normal weather condition. However due to global warming and lot of other factors, frequently harsh weather situation can be observed. As a result, new research works are needed to tackle the problem of MPPT in harsh weather conditions.

Few results are available for MPPT in harsh conditions. Most of them lack proper theoretical foundation and often relies on approaches based on heuristics. As a result, there are no guarantees that those techniques will work in practice. So, the main focus of this PhD work will be to propose novel techniques for MPPT in harsh conditions that are theoretically elegant while at the same time practically useful.

Coventry University

Coventry University has been voted ‘Modern University of the Year’ three times running by The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide. Ranked in the UK’s top 15 (Guardian University Guide), we have a global reputation for high quality teaching and research with impact. Almost two-thirds (61%) of our research was judged ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.

The Research Institute for Future Transport and Cities has a thriving student community who are integral to the success of the Institute and contribute to our wide-ranging research portfolio.

We take a fresh approach to the challenges facing society by bringing together world-class experts from art and design, human factors, engineering, computer systems and business studies into one focussed Institute. Our work covers automotive, aerospace, maritime and rail transport modes and allows us to take the lead in cross cutting research developing new forms of transport, new forms of manufacturing and new forms of information provision and security. Our research focusses on six key themes:

Design
Manufacturing
Materials & Structures
Systems
Supply Chain
Business Environment
We have a unique position in UK universities – with over 140 research staff and 120 PhD research students in the Institute capitalising on our links with Coventry City and its status as a European Living Lab for transport and our close collaboration and joint initiatives with major stakeholders.
