About the Project

Crystallisation is a separation technique commonly used for the purification of substances whereby solids are separated from a solution. The technique is used abundantly in industry, with practical applications in pharmaceuticals, chemical, food industries and biotechnology. We would like to develop this technology further, by employing strong electric fields. You will investigate all the different aspects of strong electric fields affecting protein crystallisation, and use strong electric field to separate and purify different proteins from mixtures. This is a joint project between the School of Engineering and School of Biology at the University of Edinburgh. Self-funded candidates from all over the world are also encouraged to apply.

Funding Notes

Minimum entry qualification – a First Class degree (or International equivalent) in materials science, chemical engineering or physics discipline, possibly supported by an MSc degree. Experience in nanotechnology and their characterization techniques is a plus, but not essential. Experience with CAD software is essential. Only UK/EU citizens are eligible to apply.

Applications are welcomed from self-funded students, or students who are applying for scholarships from the University of Edinburgh or elsewhere.
