About the Project

1 Year Enterprise-led Funded Masters by Research

Plants possess a variety of natural defence mechanisms to protect themselves against attack from disease and herbivory. Many of these defences are inducible, and are regulated by plant hormones and other stress-related signals. In this project, you will test the idea that waste material from crop production may be a plentiful source of biological molecules able to induce insect and disease resistance responses.

Project objectives:
1. Develop pilot-scale procedures to isolate organic compounds from a tomato waste processing pipeline.
2. Test the recovered compounds for their biological activity in enhancing pest and disease resistance in tomato plants.

Applicants should have a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Ecology or other relevant subjects.

Enterprise and collaborative partners
This Masters by Research is a collaborative research project between Lancaster University with supervision by Dr Mike Roberts and Dr Emmanouil Papaioannou and Steve Price of Biotech Services Limited. Biotech Services Ltd is an innovative company working with major corporations across the UK. They specialise in developing systems and processes to turn waste materials in to novel products.

• Receive a contribution of £2,000 towards your tuition fees from your business partner. Tuition fees for 2017-2018 are set as £4,195 for UK/EU applicants and £17,510 for international applicants. Tuition fees for 2018-19 are yet to be set (see university website for published rates by year of entry). Candidates are required to pay the remaining fees up front at the beginning of the project.
