Project Description

PhD Studentship – Psychological resilience amongst healthcare workers: An exploration of the nature of team relationships

Applications are invited for a fully funded full-time PhD studentship exploring the nature of relationships within teams in healthcare settings, with a focus on the impact of targeted interventions on psychological resilience.

Building emotional resilience to combat workplace-related stress is an important area for research focus. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) define work related stress as “the adverse reaction that people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work” (HSE, 2017, p.3), reporting that 12.5 million working days were lost due to stress in 2016/17, representing 49% of all working days lost due to ill health. Not surprisingly, employers are looking at ways to build workforce emotional resilience.

The aims of the research will be to explore the experiences of healthcare workers in teams to develop an understanding of the relationships between team working variables (e.g. emotional support, cooperation, conflict and blame) and team psychological resilience.

To develop and evaluate an intervention for enhancing team working with a view to building team psychological resilience.
