Research Studentship in Wireless Communication: ultra high-speed communications in beyond-5G networks

3.5-year DPhil studentship, available from October 2018 (subject to eligibility requirements below).

Research Area

The project will study new techniques that will enable ultra high-speed communications in beyond-5G networks. Potential areas of focus will include latency reduction; joint transmitter and received design to improve performance; robust code design; energy-efficient modulation design; and low-complexity networking solutions. A theoretical approach to studying these topics will be taken.

The studentship is being jointly undertaken by the University of Oxford (Department of Engineering Science) and Toshiba Research Europe Ltd under the EPSRC Industrial CASE award scheme.

Award Value

The studentship covers University fees at the level set for UK students plus a stipend (tax-free maintenance grant) of £16,000 p.a. for the first year, and at least this amount for a further two years. The studentship also covers the payment of college fees (c £3,000 p.a.).

Eligibility

To be eligible for a full award (stipend plus fees) a student must have:

- settled status in the UK, meaning they have no restrictions on how long they can stay

and

- been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the grant. This means they must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences)

and

- not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. (This does not apply to UK or EU nationals)

To be eligible for a fees only award:

Students from EU counties other than the UK are generally eligible for a fees-only award. To be eligible for a fees-only award, a student must be ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU, in the same way as UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK.

Candidate Requirements

Prospective candidates will be judged according to how well they meet the following criteria:

- A first class honours degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science;
- Experience in wireless communications demonstrated by a publication at an international conference or an international journal;
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills;

The following skills are desirable but not essential:

- Ability to program in C/C++, Matlab, or Python;
