This new project, in conjunction with Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC), will develop environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques to identify external GIN stages on pasture. These molecular tools will be used alongside computational modelling techniques to identify factors associated with peri parturient ewes heavily shedding GIN eggs and farm management practises associated with increasing GIN pasture contamination. Ultimately, developed tools and models will aim to assist commercial livestock producers to develop simple and effective targeted selective treatment strategies to control GIN in peri-parturient ewes and thus, reduce GIN pasture contamination and subsequent infections in lambs whilst efficiently administrating anthelmintics. The partner, Hybu Cig Cymru-Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) is the industry-led organization responsible for the development, promotion and marketing of Welsh red meat. HCC are engaged in Research and Development as this is a core activity to make the red meat sector in Wales more profitable. Thus, Animal Health is a key element of HCC’s research remit and, to this end, HCC and IBERS have a record of successful collaboration.

The prospective applicant will be expected to work closely with HCC and the wider sheep production industry, and will receive training from Aberystwyth University in parasitology, molecular and computational modelling techniques. The prospective applicant should have a minimum of a 1st or good 2:1 in a relevant degree, a full driving licence and be available to take up the studentship by the 1st of October 2018.
