About the Project

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is one of the most extensively investigated therapeutic approaches for psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety disorders. Although its effectiveness has been empirically supported, there is still a debate regarding the specific components and mechanisms that underpin its efficacy. The current programme of research will contribute to the resolution of this debate by systematically testing the relative efficacy of different CBT components. Specifically, the aims of this project are twofold:

1. To assess the components of CBT that support the greatest behavioural change in those with depression and anxiety problems and the specific mechanisms supporting this change.
2. To delineate the contingencies responsible for the development of each condition and examine whether targeting the primary complaint is advantageous for reducing symptoms of the secondary condition.
The proposed study focuses on an important public health issue that has relevance for both professional practice and policy and builds upon an established programme of research.
