About the Project

THIS POSITION HAS NOW BEEN FILLED

The hosting research group works on aspects of genomics and molecular evolution, typically developing or applying models or methods to address biological questions. We also work closely with experimental scientists on the analysis of genomics data or for the experimental validation of hypotheses we generate through computational analysis. Recent work has included development of computational tools for the analysis of deep sequencing data from the T cell receptors and immunoglobulins, a novel method to detect genetic variation affecting germline mutation rates from haplotype data and the development and application of computational tools that can be used to disentangle the effects of cell type composition and gene expression variation in biological samples consisting of mixtures of different cell types. The group is located in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics at NUI Galway and is part of the Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Research Cluster (http://maths.nuigalway.ie/biocluster/).

This project involves the development and application of novel statistical and computational tools for the analysis of somatic mutation processes, including sources of variation across the genome, between individuals in populations and across species. This position is likely to involve primarily computational/statistical method development and data analysis and would suit someone who has a strong background in Statistics/Data Science, Computer Science or Mathematics, among others. Applications will also be considered from life scientists who can demonstrate strong statistical and computer programming skills.

Closing date and application procedure

There are a number of PhD positions available on this project. The application deadline for the first fellowship to be allocated is 29 June. Applications received subsequent to this will be considered for the remaining fellowships. For enquiries please contact Cathal Seoighe (Cathal.Seoighe *a t* nuigalway.ie). Applications should include a CV, including academic results obtained to date, and a brief covering letter outlining reasons for interest in undertaking a PhD in this area.

Funding Notes

This position is fully funded (including tuition fees). The bursary, to cover living expenses, is €18,500 per annum.
