About the Project

New advanced materials are required to fuel innovations in clean energy, transport, electronics, engineering and health care sectors.

A postgraduate research opportunity is available to carry out innovative and cutting edge research to develop novel artificial intelligence computing tools to perform machine and deep learning of the complex relationships of materials-structure-processing-properties in order to accelerate the discovery of new nanostructured materials with unique properties that respond to environmental stimuli, such as self-maintenance, self-repair, self-replication, self-diagnosis for smart devices. The findings will be validated experimentally.

This is a three-year exciting project aims to discover, design scientific and technologically important new materials and optimise them for next generation of low cost, eco-friendly and high performance devices at the UCL Institute for Materials Discovery.

A successful candidate for this postgraduate research opportunity must have a minimum of an upper second class degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Science and a broad range of relevant backgrounds with a keen interest in new materials development, high value added coating manufacturing and technological applications in aerospace and transport are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will conduct research in the state-of-the-art Materials Discovery laboratory (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/institute-for-materials-discovery) with a well-funded consumables budget. This highly interdisciplinary research will involve many national and international academic and industrial collaborations.

Funding Notes

The studentship would cover tuition fees and annual stipend of at least the Research Council minimum (currently £16,500) for eligible UK and EU applicants. Other EU nationals may be eligible for a fees-only award. International students may also be accepted on a self-funding basis.
