Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences

Applications are invited for fully-funded Ph.D. training opportunities within the School of Psychological Sciences commencing October 2013. Our research encompasses a wide range of areas (incl. psychology, neuroscience, speech and language therapy, and audiology), information about which can be found here:

http://www.psych-sci.manchester.ac.uk/research/groups/

The School hosts over 140 doctoral researchers and boasts an outstanding track-record. Our Ph.D. community play an integral role in our research environment. Successful candidates for our 2013 studentships will be expected to hold a small teaching role in addition to their research.

Awards are available over a 3-year period covering tuition fees, an annual stipend at UK Research Council rates (£13, 726 in 2013/14) and a conference/travel allowance. Applications are open to UK/EU nationals only due to the nature of the funding. However, non-EU applicants with an outstanding track record are invited to contact the Postgraduate Director, Dr Andrew Stewart (andrew.j.stewart@manchester.ac.uk), to discuss other options.

Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) a minimum 2:1, or equivalent, undergraduate degree in psychology, neuroscience, speech/language therapy, audiology, health sciences or related subject. A Masters qualification in a related area or substantial (>2 years) research experience would be advantageous but not essential.

Research proposals are welcomed from outstanding candidates. The application process involves candidates initiating contact with a potential academic supervisor to assess suitability and develop a feasible research project prior to submission of a full application. The closing date for the full application is June 21st. Interviews will be held on July 11th.

Interested applicants are recommended to take the following steps:

Visit our website to identify research areas of interest:
http://www.psych-sci.manchester.ac.uk/

Identify a potential academic supervisor based on their research profile, publications and overlapping interests:
http://www.psych-sci.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/staff/

Contact your potential supervisor enclosing the following:

  • CV
  • Brief (250-300 words) research proposal highlighting the main research objectives and suggested approach to meeting those objectives.
  • Academic transcripts
  • Contacts for two referees

Once you have the support of a potential supervisor, the final versions of these documents (incl. an expanded research proposal of not more than 1000 words and supporting statement from your potential supervisor) should be submitted to Emma Braithwaite on our Admissions Team (Emma.Braithwaite@manchester.ac.uk)

Deadline for applications: Friday June 21st 2013

Further information relating to our postgraduate training, identifying potential supervisors and the studentship scheme should be directed to Dr Andrew Stewart (andrew.j.stewart@manchester.ac.uk).
