Wellcome Trust 4-year Doctoral Programme in Infection Immunology and Translational Medicine
Research into fundamental mechanisms in Infection and Immunity has led to important advances in our understanding of the molecular and cellular pathogenesis of disease and the control of the immune system. However, a key challenge is to translate this information into the clinic in the form of improved diagnostics and treatments. This programme provides opportunities for research in the scientific basis of diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites plus the innate and acquired immune system, together with the development of therapeutics and vaccines.
The course offers training for graduate students, whose research questions are influenced by the clinical context. The programme is unique and distinctive in offering integrated training across Infection, Immunology and Translational Medicine. It builds on Oxford’s outstanding research record in these areas, spans several research sites in Oxford, and includes centres of excellence in Kenya, Thailand and Vietnam combined with interdisciplinary training.
Key features of the Programme
- Tailored integrated graduate training in the Infection and Immunology within a Translational Medicine context.
- In the first year, students will undergo three 11 week lab rotations in the areas of Infection, Immunology and Translational Medicine.
- Students will be advised on their choice of courses and laboratory rotations.
- In the second year, students will start their PhD project drawn from a list of over 50 world class supervisors. This choice will be informed by the Students’ exposure to potential supervisors and scientific areas during the first year.
The programme is run from the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology and involves a number of Departments and Institutes within the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Oxford. A full list of participating supervisors can be found here.

The Programme Director is Professor Christoph Tang and the Co-Directors are Professor Nicole Zitzmann and Professor Jan Rehwinkel.
Shortlisting will take place on Thursday 17th January 2019 and interviews will be held on Thursday 24th January 2018 and Friday 25th January 2019. Due to the time between shortlisting and interview dates, please bear in mind you could be called for interview at short notice.
