(MRes plus) EngD Urban Sustainability and Resilience

The UCL Engineering Doctorate in Urban Sustainability and Resilience (EngD) provides students with the opportunity to tackle a challenging research problem identified by industry as critical to our urban environment. Students spend a significant amount of time working with their sponsoring partners, gaining invaluable industry experience.

While on campus, students undertake a customised combination of graduate-level modules. The taught programme focuses on engineering systems and developing technologies and methodologies that will both increase the resilience and support the sustainability of our urban systems and infrastructure. Students undertaking the EngD will join the UCL Centre for Urban Sustainability and Resilience (USAR) which has a broad research focus that includes reducing the impact of our cities on ecological systems (air, water, food chains, and so on) whilst improving the quality of daily lives and coping with the problems of population growth and changing demographics such as an ageing society. USAR is concerned with engineering systems and developing technologies that will increase the resilience of our urban systems (education, health, transport, financial, governance, etc.) and the infrastructure that supports them (for example: roads, communications networks, buildings) to shocks arising from natural, economic and technological disasters.

USAR engages in multidisciplinary research across College and beyond meaning its research engineers benefit from first class knowledge exchange in a dynamic intellectual environment. USAR is based in the UCL Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE), a revolutionary department within UCL, distinguished by its radical thinking and interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching. Our graduates may choose to enter employment as consultants within industry, work for NGO's engage in post-doctoral research, become entrepreneurs or enter academia. Taught Modules:

Year 1 (MRes):

• 2 x research skills modules
• 2 x technical skills modules (free choice)

In addition, students submit a MRes thesis and deliver a presentation at a dedicated event in September. * Leading to the award of Master of Research (MRes).

Years 2 - 4 (EngD):

• 1 x project management module
• 1 x resilience module
• 1 x sustainability module
• 1 x technical module (free choice)

In addition, students must pass a progression examination (equivalent to MPhil upgrade) and, at the end of the programme must submit an EngD thesis and are examined by viva voce. * Leading to the award of Engineering Doctorate (EngD) and the title of Doctor.

When applying, prospective students should submit a research proposal (to include: research objectives, methodology, case study location and relevant background) and indicate a preferred supervisor.
