About Middle East & Mediterranean Studies Research, MPhil/PhD

Our flourishing research programme offers a unique and exciting environment for the in-depth study of the varied aspects of the Mediterranean and Middle East. The programme has attracted students from all over the Middle East and Mediterranean (including Egypt, Israel, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iraq, Bahrain and Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates), as well as Europe, Japan, Canada and the United States.

We receive over 250 enquiries and applications a year. We are currently home to a dynamic, diverse and highly talented group of 60 PhD students from 28 countries undertaking doctoral research in a number of core areas where we already have a long-established track record of research excellence.

Students are carrying out research in areas as diverse as:

  • the Middle East Peace process,
  • the history of Zionism,
  • Greek-Turkish foreign relations,
  • Euro-Arab and Euro-Mediterranean political and economic relations;
  • Israel's foreign and domestic policy;
  • the foreign policy of the Arab world;
  • Social change in Kuwaiti Society,
  • UAE National Security Policy.
