About the Programme

Studying History of Art at the University of Glasgow will offer you unique opportunities for object-based learning using outstanding local collections and archives, as well as training in research methods and skills. An impressive 85% of our research is rated as world leading or internationally excellent, according to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, which ranks History of Art at Glasgow the highest of all universities in the UK.


You can choose to study a:

• MRes: Master of Research, dissertation 17,000 to 30,000 words, one year or two years part-time. This is a flexible programme offering a combination of taught and research components.
• MPhil: Master of Philosophy, thesis length 30,000 - 40,000 words. One year full-time, two years part-time.
• MLitt: Master of Letters, thesis length 40,000 - 70,000 words. Two years full-time, three years part-time.
• PhD: Doctor of Philosophy, thesis length 70,000 - 100,000 words. Three years full-time, five years part-time.


Areas of research interest which could offer opportunities for research supervision include:

  • European art historical periods, particularly medieval, Renaissance, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries
  • Modernist studies, particularly Dada, Surrealism and German art
  • Chinese art and culture
  • The development and application of art theory, particularly gender and post-1945
  • Collecting practices, collections and museums
  • Technical art history
  • Dress and textile history
  • Textile conservation.

AHRC Doctoral Programme Scotland 2014-15
The University of Glasgow is part of a consortium of eight Higher Education Institutions which has been awarded £14.2 million of funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to support 200 postgraduate studentships over the next five years.
These studentships will be at the annually published AHRC rates and will include an annual stipend, plus tuition fees at the Home/EU rate.

College of Arts Scholarships for all Arts and Humanities subject areas
This Scholarship offers an annual stipend plus tuition fees at the Home/ EU rate.

Applying
The closing date for receipt of both admissions and scholarship applications is Monday, 13 January 2014. Applicants will be informed by Friday, 14 February 2014 if their applications are being put forward to the SGSAH for consideration. www.sgsah.ac.uk
