About the Programme

University of Essex History Doctoral Scholarship 2013

Duration: three years, full-time

Overview

This Essex Doctoral Scholarship is intended to support a talented PhD student to study History at the University. This award is available to a student who can demonstrate an excellent academic background and the potential for future achievement, as well as financial need. It is awarded for each year of study during the standard minimum period of enrolment for your degree, subject to satisfactory progress. Financial details as follows:

  • University of Essex Doctoral Scholarship – worth £16,250 per year comprising fee waiver (or partial fee waiver for overseas students) to a maximum value of £4,000, living costs of £12,000 per year (consisting of a stipend and Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantship), plus a training bursary of £250 per year.

AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award – Factories of Empire: The British in Baghdad and the Persian Gulf c.1620-1822

Duration: three years, full-time

Overview

Applications are invited for a full-time AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Studentship commencing autumn 2013 on Factories of Empire: The British in Baghdad and the Persian Gulf c.1620-1822.

Supervised by Dr Mark R. Frost from the Department of History, University of Essex and Dr Margaret Makepeace, Lead Curator of East India Company Records at the British Library, the successful candidate will be located at the Department of History at Essex and also play an active part in the British Library's ongoing Gulf History Project. Beginning with an examination of the British Library's East India Company Persia and Persian Gulf Factory Records, this three-year doctoral studentship will examine the British presence in Baghdad and the Persian Gulf during a crucial era of European expansion.

The award pays fees and an annual maintenance grant (£13,726 for 2013-14) with the British Library contributing up to a further £1000 p.a. for approved research-related expenses. The usual AHRC eligibility rules apply to these studentships, including having an appropriate Masters degree by October 2013 and meeting the AHRC's residential requirements.
