Welsh School of Architecture - Postgraduate Research Opportunities

The outstanding research undertaken in the Welsh School of Architecture is making a major contribution towards developing and understanding the requirements for a sustainable built environment that responds to the needs of society. As a result of its performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the School is ranked in the Top 5 UK Schools of its kind according to Research Power (one of the range of accepted measures of excellence).

The School also consistently appears at the top of published rankings for teaching. In a very positive report following the 2002 academic review by the Quality Assurance Agency, the reviewers concluded they had confidence in the academic standards achieved by the programmes in architecture, and the quality of student progression, along with the quality of learning resources, was commended.

Research at the Welsh School of Architecture
Research is organised in two research groups and seven research centres:

• Architectural Science Group (ASG)
• Architectural History and Theory Group (AHTG)
• Centre for Research in the Built Environment (CRiBE)
• Centre for Sustainable Design of the Built Environment (SuDOBE)
• Wales Energy Research Centre (WERC)
• Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI)
• Practice, Research and Advancement in South Asian Design and Architecture (PRASADA)
• Design Research Unit Wales (DRUw)
• Centre for Education in the Built Environment (CEBE)

The School has the most advanced research facilities and computer modelling capabilities available, such as the Environmental Laboratory's artificial sky, heliodon and wind tunnel which provide scale-modelling capabilities of international standing, enabling research that cannot be undertaken elsewhere in the UK.

The PhD Programme
Candidates may study at the School for both full-time and part-time research degrees. There is also the option of studying externally, away from the School. Full-time PhD candidates normally study for 3 years and part-time PhD candidates normally study for 5 years. Full-time study of the MPhil degree is normally 1 year but can be 2 years. Part-time study tends to take place over 2 years but can be over 3 years.

The School is host to a team of internationally-recognised research staff who bring an exciting mix of design approaches and experiences to the supervision of postgraduate researchers.

Funding Opportunities
A number of PhD studentships are usually available each year, funded by UK Research Councils and other bodies. In addition, the University has been awarded a number of AHRC Postgraduate Studentships in the History of Art, Architecture and Design via a Block Grant Partnership for 2009-2013.
