About the Programme

Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Culture has an international reputation as a centre for teaching and research. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 75% of the research activity submitted by the School was judged to be of international excellence, with 45% of submitted research activity judged to be “world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.” According to the measure of Research Fortnight Research Power, The School ranks in the top four media schools in the UK.

Research at the School of Journalism, Media and Culture
The School conducts cutting edge, inter-disciplinary research in journalism, media and cultural studies and is home to scholars with worldwide reputations. We are regularly commissioned to carry out research for professional and industry organisations (e.g. the BBC, Independent Television Commission and National Union of Journalists), as well as for regulatory and governmental bodies (such as the Welsh Assembly, Electoral Commission and European Union). In addition, we conduct work for charities ranging from Oxfam to the Nuffield Foundation.

The above groups are complemented by additional expertise within JOMEC in fields such as: Audience and fan studies, Children and the media, Feminist media studies and cinema and new media.

Our staff includes some of the world's leading writers and thinkers on media and cultural topics. They work alongside other teachers and researchers who have had outstanding careers in journalism, the media industries and public relations.

The PhD Programme
The School has a thriving MPhil/ PhD programme, with typically over 48 doctorates in progress at any one time. Students can conduct their research on either a full-time or part-time basis.

The School is also a member of the Graduate School in Humanities and the Graduate School in Social Sciences which offer many training benefits for postgraduate students and encourage interdisciplinary research.

Funding Opportunities
The School usually offers a number of research awards each year to assist outstanding applicants with tuition fees. When available, the awards are advertised on the School website (www.cardiff.ac.uk/jomec) and in the University's Funding and Scholarship Search database at www.cardiff.ac.uk/searchforfunding, which also lists other potential funding opportunities.

In addition, the University has been awarded a number of AHRC Postgraduate Studentships in relevant subject areas (such as English Language and Literature, and Creative Writing) via a Block Grant Partnership for 2009-2013.
