Cardiff University School of Healthcare Sciences - PhD Opportunities

Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies is one of the top ten nursing and midwifery departments in the UK, evidencing work of both international and world-leading quality in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The School has 128 academic staff, including six professors. In addition, we have a large number of clinical practitioners who support the clinical supervision of students. The School delivers high quality educational programmes to 2,300 students a year.

Research at the School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies
The School's research structure comprises three themes (work and organisation; health knowledge; and health technologies) and three cross-cutting clinical foci (genetics; mental health; and long-term conditions). Each theme addresses relevant issues applied to the clinical foci as appropriate.

The School welcomes applications from students interested in pursuing a research degree in the areas listed below:

• Health and social care delivery and organisation
• Evidence appraisal, synthesis and utilisation

• Wound healing
• Genetics
• Mental health
• Paediatric diabetes
• Patient safety
• Culture and communication in nursing

Research in the School is primarily led by the Nursing, Health and Social Care Research Centre. The School also operates the Wales Centre for Evidence-Based Care (a collaborating centre of the Joanna Briggs Institute) and staff members contribute to a number of other research centres and networks based at the University. These include the Centre for Economic and Social Aspects of Genomics and the Healing Foundation UK Centre for Burns Research.

The PhD Programme
There are facilities for suitable candidates to register for the degrees of MPhil or PhD. The doctoral degree scheme normally consists of three years' full-time study. Opportunities are also available for part-time study.

The Professional Doctorate in Nursing (DNurs)
This programme provides an integrated approach in which education, health and social work professionals work together for at least 50% of the study modules. The normal expectation is for the taught element to be completed in two years, and the thesis to be completed within a further two years. The maximum time limit for the degree overall is 7 years.

Funding Opportunities
Many of the School's research projects receive funding from the Service Delivery Organisation (SDO), Medical Research Council (MRC), Wales Office for Resaerch and Development (WORD) and the Department of Health, and the School is able to offer a number of PhD studentships each year.
