Funded PhD Programme (European/UK Students Only)

About the Programme

The School of Law at the University of Surrey invites applications from outstanding individuals for fully-funded PhD studentships starting in October 2013. The studentships will cover Home/EU tuition fees and, in addition, will provide maintenance of up to £14,340 pa*.

The School of Law brings together diverse research interests, providing a stimulating and supportive environment for postgraduate study. Members of its academic staff have international reputations for research and the School is home to a thriving community of doctoral students engaged in a wide range of projects. Applications may be made in any area of law in which the School has expertise but will be particularly welcomed from common lawyers, including those who wish to pursue research in Sentencing and Penal Policy or Commercial Law. Details of our research interests and the expertise of our academic staff are available at: http://www.surrey.ac.uk/law/people/index.htm

Applicants will require an excellent academic track record (minimum of a very good Upper Second first degree along with a Masters degree with at least a Merit) or professional or other qualification deemed by the University to be appropriate.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate outstanding research potential and the commitment and enthusiasm to pursue a research project to its conclusion. Successful applicants will undertake a structured, supervised programme of scholarly research leading to a thesis that makes an original contribution to knowledge and which enables them to pursue publication in academic journals.
*Maintenance comprises a stipend of £11,130, a research training support grant of up to £750 and payment for demonstrating duties up to £2,460 per annum. Studentships are tenable for up to 3 years subject to satisfactory progress.
