About the Project

Brunel University and Ordnance Survey are pleased to offer a joint studentship for a PhD in applying user-centred design to geographic data products.

The usability of geographic data is a particular challenge, distinct from the usability of the product itself; the focus being on the data itself – how it is structured and encoded. A previous project at Ordnance Survey established tools for investigating user context and issues; the current PhD will build upon this to focus on investigating methods to assist the development of geographic data products such that they aid the usability of the data within the products. In particular, this PhD will:

• Identify the relevant potential areas to develop and apply design techniques (e.g., data structures, data encoding etc.)
• For a subset of these, investigate solutions that promote usability
• For this subset, devise methods that will aid the product developer to apply the correct design approach

The student will be primarily based in the School of Engineering & Design at Brunel University, but will be expected to spend time placed at Ordnance Survey headquarters in Southampton to understand the precise challenges and issues. Travel and subsistence costs will also be supported.

Applicants will be expected to hold a first or upper second class degree in a relevant subject such as human factors / ergonomics, with an interest in computer science or software engineering. There will be an interview as part of the selection process.

Applications must be submitted by 10 February 2012 and include:
• A cover letter stating your motivations for the project, including the details of two referees
• An academic CV including a list of any publications
• A short (1 page max) proposal detailing your interpretation of the brief and your approach to the project
• A sample of your written work

For further information, or to make an application, please contact Dr Mark Young at Brunel University on [Email Address Removed]. For more information on the research environment at Brunel, see www.brunel.ac.uk/sed or www.brunel.ac.uk/ergonomics

Funding Notes

The value of the studentship is £17k per year for three years. In addition, registration fees for UK / EU students will be covered, and there will be a limited amount of further financial support for attendance at conferences and/or workshops.
