Under currently used technology considerable amounts of water are used to move waste to large-scale processing plants. The research will contribute towards the development of distributed processing facilities, self-sufficient in water and energy. A 'biorefinery' approach will be adopted, with recovery of valuable components as well as sterilisation of waste products.
