About the Project

The Public Health & Applied Health Interventions (PH&AHI) research theme seeks to appoint an outstanding graduate to undertake a 3-year studentship in the following area:

The development and evaluation of an SMS-based intervention to improve blood glucose control in children with Type 1 Diabetes

SMS is widely used by young people in the UK to support their social networks, to harness social support and co-ordinate daily activities with friends and family. Using participatory design this project will develop an SMS-based intervention for young people with Type 1 Diabetes. The system will build on young people’s current practices, expectations and experiences, to design a moderated peer support system and also enable targeted delivery of basic healthcare information.

PH&AHI is a multidisciplinary research theme that brings together health, social and behavioural science and clinical expertise to conduct applied health research with a focus on public health and applied health interventions. Our research is concerned with five broad areas: understanding and tackling health inequalities; understanding and changing health related behaviours; prevention of alcohol misuse; public health nutrition; and evaluation of public health policy. There is inevitably considerable overlap and trans-disciplinary working between these themes. Our work spans a diverse range of professional areas and utilises a wide range of research methods and disciplines. Applicants are invited to contact the research theme leads named above for further details about individual projects.
