About the Project

Plants precisely deposit micron-scale rings of lignin (wood) around specialized cells in the root, though how this is acheived is largely unknown. This project will investigate the role of specific proteins in controlling this deposition, and if sucessful will lead to the ability to precisely locate and build biologically-based micron-scale lignin structures. Such knowledge will both lay the foundation for future engineering of lignin-based micro devices, and also engineering of lignin with improved properties as a feedstock for biofuel production.

Funding Notes

Funding is available to UK nationals or those EU nationals who can demonstrate that they have been resident in the UK for three years.

Candidates should have (or expect to achieve) a First Class or 2.1 Honours degree in a relevant subject.

When applying, please select Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences to ensure that your application is passed to the appropriate College for processing
