About the Project
A PhD studentship is available now at the University of Birmingham (School of Biosciences) funded by the EPSRC and BBSRC and in collaboration with industry.
The project is part of a wider investigation into the use of microorganisms to make hydrogen for clean energy applications. The microorganisms also make CO2 as a by-product. The aim of the project is to turn the process from a carbon neutral one into a carbon positive one by utilising the waste CO2 from hydrogen production to make a valuable product. This ‘waste into product’ conversion will make sure nothing is wasted, controlling CO2 emissions while making clean electricity and generating an additional product stream in an integrated process. There will be the opportunity to work in industry at the sponsor company in the UK or in Europe for part of the time.
The successful applicant will have a least an upper second class degree in a relevant subject: Microbiology/biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemistry or Engineering.
The project will start 30th September 2009 or by mutual arrangement.

The School of Biosciences offers a number of UK Research Council (e.g. BBSRC, NERC) PhD studentships each year. Fully funded research council studentships are normally only available to UK nationals (or EU nationals resident in the UK) but part-funded studentships may be available to EU applicants resident outside of the UK. The deadline for applications for research council studentships is 31 January each year.
Each year we also have a number of fully funded Darwin Trust Scholarships. These are provided by the Darwin Trust of Edinburgh and are for non-UK students wishing to undertake a PhD in the general area of Molecular Microbiology. The deadline for this scheme is also 31 January each year.
