Admissions
Very Important: to apply for this project you need a masters level qualification in economics or a strong background in statistical analysis such as regression analysis. It would also be helpful if you had previously worked with panel data. You will need to write a research proposal.
Methods
The research would involve quantitative analysis of panel data or other large data sets, but priority will be given to those wishing to work with the BHPS/Understanding Society or ELSA data sets or similar panel data sets collected in other countries. Prospective students need to be competent in using econometric or more general statistical techniques such as multiple regression to test hypotheses relating to the labour market.
Topic area
Issues relating to gender and age that concern employment (paid or voluntary): retirement decision making, informal caregiving and the relationship between paid and unpaid work would all be of relevance.
In addition your research proposal should ideally fall within the scope of the following ESRC strategic priorities:
1. Influencing behaviour and Informing Interventions – Create a better understanding of how and why people and organisations make decisions, and how these can be managed or influenced.
2. A vibrant and fair society – Develop ways to enhance the role and contributions of citizens, voluntary sector organisations and social enterprises to create a vibrant national and global society.

The University of Birmingham ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) is one of 21 across the UK that has been accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). These awards are available to UK/EU students; they cover tuition fees at UK/EU rates, plus a maintenance stipend (of around £13,590). For 2013 we were able to offer 14 ESRC scholarships to fund postgraduate training and doctoral research. The deadline for applications was 4pm, Monday 28 January 2013. Career overview
Professor Fiona Carmichael joined Birmingham Business School in 2007. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of East Anglia, obtained in 1989, and an MPhil in Economics from Cambridge University, completed in 1985. Her undergraduate degree, a BA(Hons) first class in Economics, Politics, and Quantitative Methods, was also from the University of East Anglia, awarded in 1983. Professor Carmichael''s research primarily focuses on labour economics, the sociology of work, health economics, and sports economics and policy. Her current research centres on employment and policy issues related to older age, the ageing society, and the care economy.

Professor Fiona Carmichael''s research focuses on the intersection of labour economics, the sociology of work, human resource management, health economics, and sports economics and policy. Her current research primarily addresses employment and policy issues related to older age, the ageing society, and the care economy. She is particularly interested in topics such as gender, age and work, informal care and paid employment, and the economics of sport.
