Dr D Overend, Prof G Jeffery  No more applications being accepted  Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

The practice-as-research project aims to provide new knowledge about the use of playwriting as a research methodology. Work produced will be critically and theoretically informed and is likely to involve experimentation with form and process. The exact nature of the project will be proposed by the applicant and could include a wide range of approaches, from site-based work to multimedia performance; feminist discourses to postdramatic structures. Preference will be given to innovative and ambitious applications that demonstrate a strong understanding of academic research practice and the requirements of doctoral study.

This full time PhD studentship is a unique opportunity for an established playwright seeking to develop skills in academic writing and practice-based research. The project involves submission of a written thesis and a portfolio of plays or scenes written during the studentship. Outputs may include public readings, productions, conference papers and articles.

The project will be based at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow and University of the West of Scotland’s Paisley campus. The Director of Studies will be theatre director and lecturer, Dr. David Overend (directing credits in 2013 include Bullet Catch by Rob Drummond and The Pirate by Stuart Hepburn), with additional supervision from Playwrights’ Studio’s Creative Director, Fiona Sturgeon Shea. Additional dramaturgical input may also be provided.
