Dr Majella Lane  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

A number of studies have confirmed elevated activities of desquamatory and inflammatory proteases in patients with impaired skin barrier function. In addition, the effects of specific formulations on these proteases have also been reported in recent years. An understanding of the effects of formulations and formulation components on such proteases will allow the design of “smart” formulations which will actually improve skin barrier function. The objectives of this PhD project are to:
(i) Evaluate the effects of specific formulations on the skin
(ii) Identify formulation components which promote skin health
(iii) Develop and evaluate novel formulations which improve skin barrier function

Main methods and techniques to be employed
In vitro skin permeation studies
In vivo studies on human subjects
Conventional analytical techniques including HPLC, LC-MS, NMR
Biomarker assay and validation

Experience of biomarker assay development is desirable.

The successful applicant will be expected to have a UK Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering, awarded with first or upper second-class Honours, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard from a recognised higher educaiton institute, or a recognised taught Master's degree is required. Additionally, experience in biomarker assay development is desirable.

Applications must include CV, personal statement plus the contact details of two referees and should be sent to Victor Diran ([Email Address Removed]).
