About the Project

Project area: Applied Mathematics
Start date: September 2012

Generic properties of physical polymers can be modelled by self-avoiding walks on a regular lattice. In order to model DNA, one adds stiffness and gives the lattice polymer a ribbon-like structure. Additionally, a pulling force or torque is added to one or more segments of the polymer.

This ties in with very recent developments of experimental techniques that have enabled sophisticated and sensitive experiments on supercoiling in DNA by applying torsion to the end of a DNA strand via optical tweezers.

Using a uniform sampling algorithm, a simple lattice ribbon model will be adapted to model this scenario. Within the lattice model one can successively simulate ever more complex situations, carefully studying the interplay of generic parameters such as stiffness and intrinsic twist of the DNA, and its response to external forcing and twisting.

The successful candidate should have a first degree in Mathematics or Physics. Knowledge of Statistical Physics and experience with programming in C or C++ is highly desirable.

The School of Mathematical Sciences is one of the largest UK mathematical science departments and is one of five Schools in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Queen Mary. The School offers energetic and diverse postgraduate activity across the spectrum of mathematical sciences from pure and applied mathematics to statistics.
